So, in October, I celebrated my 21st birthday, and as tradition, I wrote out a list of 21 things I’ve learnt in those years of living. I thought it may be a good idea to write another list…but University style, as there’s so much I’ve learnt from the past year and a half of attending it.
Here we go!
- Do the reading when it is set, not 2 days before the exam
- Always back up your work on more than one device…as I found out that USB sticks tend to break at the most inconvenient of times
- Sometimes, sleep and rest is more important than work
- Stop stressing about the small things!
- Not everyone is going to like you and that is OKAY
- Know your limits (alcohol, AND work wise)
- Know when it’s time to ask for help
- Don’t be afraid to share your ideas
- Put yourself out there – even if it’s really uncomfortable
- Keep in contact with your tutor – you may not think you need them, but you will
- Always start your essays early – give yourself enough time to check it, and then check it again before submitting
- Don’t be a afraid to tell noisy people in lectures to shut up – remember this is your education!
- While coffee helps in most situations, you cannot live off it
- Reach out to your friends during stressful exam times
- Always take one day off a week to de-stress. Alone and quiet time is good for the soul
- There is no such thing as “I can’t do it”. You CAN do it, you just don’t WANT to – there’s a difference
- Always keep your desk tidy
- Try not to skip lectures – you’ll fall into the habit of doing it
- Also: panopto doesn’t always work so it’s best to actually turn UP to your lectures
- Procrastination is a deadly disease – avoid it at all costs
- And most importantly, you don’t have to know exactly what you want to do in life – it’s okay to keep your options open or go with the flow. Trust that you’re on the right path and just enjoy your university adventure!
See you all on the flipside!
